The legal limits
UK law regulates how much light must pass through the front glass, measured as Visible Light Transmission (VLT). Rear windows behind the driver are not restricted.
- Windscreen: at least 75% VLT
- Front side windows: at least 70% VLT (cars first used after 1 April 1985)
- Rear side windows and rear screen: no legal limit
What happens if you are over the limit
Police can issue a prohibition notice requiring the film to be removed, along with a fixed penalty. An illegal tint can also complicate an insurance claim if the vehicle is not declared as modified.
Getting the benefits legally
Most people want tint for heat and UV, not darkness. Modern ceramic films reject a large share of infrared heat while staying within legal VLT, so you can tint the front legally and go darker only behind the driver.
